Where to begin as an unknown writer

When I first started writing, I didn’t know where to publish my content. I actually spend more than 3 years writing random stuff in my notebook. I knew I had to publish in order to earn an income and for the world to hear my voice but I just didn’t know where to start.

Be creative

Being an unknown writer can be a disadvantage for everyone. I learned that during the pandemic. After thinking long and hard, I decided to try publishing my content and in less than 3 months, I earned around $800. It was not much considering what I am earning now (I now make that in a week or two) but it was enough to pay my bills at that time.

Here are the platforms that I used to make money online as a freelance writer when I first started. I only named a few.

  1. Fiverr
There are lots of things you can do on Fiverr as a freelancer and as a freelance writer, you can write articles for clients, edit their articles, translate their articles, etc. Since I am fond of writing, I helped write articles on fitness and health and this is one of the best niches to focus on, on Fiverr.
  2. Dreame / Stary Writing
This platform is about novels. If you are interested in writing stories, this platform is for you. What I like about Stary is that even though you promote your stories on social media networks, Stary also promotes your book and you can even find your book on Editor’s weekly pick. I have been with Stary since 2020 and to say that I am happy with the platform would be an understatement. They mostly focus on romance, paranormal, fantasy, etc.
Brainstorm your ideas.

3. Upwork
There are many gigs posted on Upwork every minute and it is easy to find the one you think is suitable for you. You set up your hourly rates. I just joined Upwork myself and for that reason, there isn’t much I can say about it except that it pays really well.

4. Writers' Work
This one can be a problem if you are not ready to make a little investment. What I like about writers’ work is that what you earn is what you get. They don’t take any percentage of your earnings and that means if you make $1500 a month, you receive exactly that, not 70 or 80% of that like most platforms.

5. Wattpad
This is not about earning money, it’s about getting an audience. You want to start writing right? Wattpad will help you increase the number of people who are willing to read your books. You will not only get an audience but also reviews and comments from your readers and that helps you to understand what people are looking for from you.

Even though these platforms will be useful to you, you also need to market your work, especially if you want to be an author. Check what others are doing and most importantly, become a good reader. Read books related to your niche and analyze what other successful writers are doing.

Good luck!
